What is The Worm Factory® 5-Tray Worm Composter - Terra Cotta and how does it work?
The Worm Factory® is a multi-tray worm composter that helps manage the composting process. Fill each stacking tray with kitchen scraps such as newspaper, junk mail, vegetables, fruits, egg shells, coffee grounds, paper, and cardboard into nutrient-rich compost for your garden. Most "Master Gardeners" consider worm castings to be the very best compost available. Your plants will thrive with this all-natural compost. Sorting out the undigested scraps can be a messy, inconvenient chore with ordinary worm composters.Worms start in the bottom tray and migrate upward as they break down the waste. This allows worms to separate themselves from the finished compost making it easy to add nutrient-rich fertilizer to plants and gardens without sorting worms. Additionally, nutrient-rich moisture is captured in the collection tray and can be drained as liquid fertilizer known as "worm tea".

What are the benefits of using The Worm Factory®?

  • The Worm Factory® is Compact:
With its square design and having the smallest footprint of all the worm composters, The Worm Factory® works great for anyone with space requirements. The Worm Factory® uses a tray stacking system which allows it to hold the largest capacity of compost in the smallest amount of space.

  • The Worm Factory® is Odorless:
The ventilation lid allows proper air flow and the instruction manual helps you manage The Worm Factory® correctly to prevent odor. This means that The Worm Factory® can be used year round and can be housed anywhere including apartments, kitchens, garages, porches, etc.

  • The Worm Factory® is Easy to Manage:
The 16 page instruction manual makes the setup process fast and easy and gives detailed instructions on how manage the bin year round. Each tray holds 12.5 lbs. of compost which makes lifting and arranging trays effortless. The ventilation lid also contains a list of composting tips for quick reference.

  • The Worm Factory® Saves Time:
Let The Worm Factory® do the work for you! Instead of spending time turning piles of compost yourself and removing worms by hand, the multi-tray system separates the worms from the compost so you don't have to. Also, because the worms continually eat through your kitchen scraps and junk mail, nutrient-rich compost is produced at a faster rate than traditional ways of composting. In full operation, the Worm Factory® houses 6,000 worms, consumes 5 to 8 lbs. of food a week, allowing you to harvest a full tray of nutrient rich castings every month. This allows you to bring rich dark compost to your plants and gardens at a faster rate.

So, I've only had my composter for about a month but I really dig it. I love the worms! They're like my new little pets. I opted for only a half pound of worms--I could probably have added another tray by now if I'd gotten a whole pound. The composter is definitely odor free if you manage it properly. Maybe I would have liked the lid and the longer legs on the 360 better, but the original is suiting me just fine. Can't wait till I can give my garden some worm tea!

I was not pleased with the initial results. After the first few days most of our worms (1lb. or more)had tired to get out because of the intense heat and had collected in the bottom drain and had drowned! Many had collected in the corners and were dying. The the stench was strong and we had to completely replace the and restock the bin. At present we are only using the top try and the 3rd tray only and with fewer worms. We keep this bin in the shade on a patio, but perhaps this bin is not made for hotter (S.Tx.) climates to perform as it is described.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 5-Tray Worm Composter - Terra Cotta:

A little early to tell as we have only been using the product a few days, but so far it seems to be working as advertised. We did get a little worried when the worms arrived two days before the trays, but the directions clearly told us how to care for our friendly critters. Shipping for our purchase was amazingly fast, especially this close to Christmas. One side note is our 3 year old granddaughter has adopted our worm farm as her own, and really enjoys feeding and caring for her friends when she stays with us a couple of days a week. Much better than television. :) I'll let you in on a secret, wait till our granddaughter sees what Santa is getting her for Christmas. Her very own worm farm. Hope her mom and dad understand.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 5-Tray Worm Composter - Terra Cotta:

I am keeping the trays inside because of winter setting in. My worms are falling through the holes and drowning in the little bit of water that accumulates. I finally shoved a paper towel under the spout so when when fall through the holes, they won't slide down and drown. I am really disappointed in the product. I wish I hadn't spent the money and saved the little worms lives.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 5-Tray Worm Composter - Terra Cotta:

Been wormfarming for about a year but this system is simply great! Easier to handle, very attractive container versus what I was using and collection of the "tea" so simple. That alone is worth the change.

          Customer Q & A

Q1: How many worms do I need to purchase with the cascade compost bin?

A: You should purchase about 1,000 worms to start your composter. After this initial purchase, the worm count will double every three months!

Q2: How long will it take 1,000 worms to make a 12.5 pound tray of compost?

A: According to our specifications it takes approximately 6,000 worms one week to make 5-8 pounds of compost. At this exact rate it would take 1,000 worms a little over 12 weeks to produce 12.5 pounds of compost.

Q3: Can I put dog droppings in any other composter other than the Pet Poo bin?

A: You should not put dog droppings in your composter, they will attract pests to the pile and can spread disease.

Q4: I ordered worms from you and they have arrived before my composter. What should I do with the worms until I get the compost bin?

A: The worms can last up to ten days in the packaging they arrived in. (Not the best, but they will last) Give them some water when they arrive.
If you're afraid they won't make it, you can make a temporary home for them instead. Put the worms into a plastic container about the size of a shoe box or bucket. Put some shredded black and white newsprint in the bottom that has been moistened (about the amount of a rung out sponge). This will act as food and bedding until your compost bin arrives and they can be placed into their new permanent home.
