Description

The SoilSaver's award-winning, classic design has been in production for more than 25 years, longer than any other major compost bin. Now that's a track record!


Tough and weather-resistant, the SoilSaver 86 Gallon Recycled Plastic Compost Bin is made of 0.25-inch-thick structural foam, black recycled plastic. The material and bin structure are designed to hold heat inside for successful composting. Each SoilSaver Classic comes with a composting guide booklet, "A Sense of Humus" in English, Spanish, and French.


The sturdy, insulated side panels bolt together, so you won't have to worry about breaking snaps or clogged plastic tabs. Rust-free, nylon-threaded fasteners hold up well in the outdoor elements. The two top latches hold the lid securely in place. The 2-foot-square top opening makes it easier to fill and mix the contents, and two bottom doors provide full access for harvesting finished compost. Each door measures 15L x 10W inches.


There are no tools required to assemble the Soilsaver Classic Compost Bin. Assembly takes less than 30 minutes and involves nine parts with 12 hardened nylon, rust-resistant nuts and bolts. This durable compost bin is backed by a manufacturer's 25-year limited warranty to ensure years of dependable use.

    After reviewing a number of different bins online, I decided to go with this one based on the thickness of plastic, type of lid and the perceived durability. I am happy to say, I chose well. The construction is sturdy and durable. Many of the other bins in a similar category and price range had complaints of panels cracking or falling off or showing up damaged in the box. This is not the case with this composter. The plastic is fairly thick, strong, but flexible and is fastened with plastic nuts and bolts, making it fairly solid. I also like the latches on the lid to keep the wind from blowing it off or from raccoons, etc out. The bin is also discrete in appearance and blends into my landscaping well. All in all, I am happy with this purchase. PS. I bought it in late summer so I haven't had time to fully produce a batch of compost yet, but from what I've read, success is more dependant on the gardener than the compost bin.

    I waited a month or 2 to report on this. I have an old rubber maid composter I bought a while ago. I never realized how good it was until I bought this one. This one is not that easy to mix and turn over the compost. There just is not the space. It is OK with composting. I had to help it along a lot with worms and dirt from my old one. It does not break down quickly and as someone else wrote about one, the dirt is not the same as the pictures.

    i just started and do not have much to say, but, i consider this product very convenient to use on my small backyard under a tree.

    Nuts and bolts made of metal would be more durable as plastic threat is not strong enough.

        I have had this compost bin since April, wanted to use it a while before reviewing. It was very easy to put together alone. (I'm a 68 year old, small woman). I really like that it goes together with nuts & bolts. Reviews of other composters indicate that many don't hold together very well. I placed it very near the back of my house (my daughter, who composts, said "you don't want to trudge through a foot of snow in the winter"). Because of that I bought the composter base to keep out unwanted critters. I suspect that because of the base, it is very stable, the sides of the bin set into the lip around the base. Because the lid is the full size of the bin, it makes it very easy to turn the compost and it locks on well so as not to blow away. I read a lot of reviews on many different composters before I purchased this one and after 5 months am very satisfied that I chose the right one. Only one minor thing that I might change, a hinge on the lid would be handy.

        Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

        Just got it - received rewiew reqest next day; so it's a little early to say for some areas. But can say easy to assemble, sturdy and not unattractive!!! i must say price is very high for several pieces of plastic thought.

        Q1: How are the sides put together? Are they fastened by screws? Also how can the compost be turned? Thank you

        A: The sides are put together with bolts. All assembly is simple and can be done with household tools. The compost can be turned by using a compost aerator through the top opening.

        Q2: Does this have a base on it so I can pick it up and move it anywhere?

        A: This does not have a base to allow for better air flow and therefore, faster composting.
